Coalition of Cities Calls for Action on Circular Economy Development
A coalition of European cities, spearheaded by Amsterdam and supported by ICLEI Europe and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, has sent an open letter to newly elected Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to promote stronger policies for a circular economy. The Circular Cities Frontrunner Group emphasizes the critical role cities play in transitioning to a circular economy, which focuses on reusing resources, minimizing waste, and regenerating nature.
The letter, signed by representatives from cities like Copenhagen, Turku, and Milan, asserts that Europe is at a pivotal moment in addressing pressing environmental, economic, and social challenges. The signatories argue that adopting circular economy principles can effectively combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, while enhancing Europe’s competitiveness and self-sufficiency.
While the letter acknowledges significant strides made by the EU, including the Circular Economy Action Plans and the Right to Repair, which have positioned Europe as a global leader in circular policies, it also highlights ongoing structural challenges. Many local economies remain dependent on unsustainable material consumption, and scaling up circular businesses is hindered by competition from traditional linear models.
The coalition urges Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to support and implement policies that empower cities to lead the circular transition, fostering sustainable urban practices and ultimately driving broader economic and environmental benefits across Europe.
