More valuable resources should be recycled

A new analysis of the composition of the residual waste stream in Copenhagen has just been completed.

In 2019, approximately 110.000 tons of residual waste was generated in Copenhagen. Residual waste is the waste that the citizens do not sort for recycling.

The analysis shows that the waste stream contains a lot of valuable resources that should be recycled rather than converted to energy. The current recycling rate for household waste in Copenhagen is approximately 45 %. The city has set the goal of achieving 70 % recycling rate by 2024.

This means that a lot more of the resources in the residual waste stream should be sorted for recycling. Copenhagen waste management plan 2024 contains information about the many initiatives which will be implemented in the coming years in order to achieve this goal.
