Partnership: Increased Online Reuse

How might product digitalisation, categorisation, and online marketing increase the potential for reuse of everyday items?

The City of Copenhagen has made significant strides in enhancing product reuse.

New local recycling stations, a dedicated "reuse collection route" for bulky waste, and ongoing improvements to existing stations have substantially increased the collection of reusable items. This momentum is set to continue, with the expansion of "reuse collection routes," enhanced capacity at recycling stations, and the opening of new local stations.

To meet the growing volume, it's crucial to match the supply with demand.

Currently limited to those physically visiting recycling stations, the demand for reusable items needs broader accessibility. Digitizing these products and integrating them into popular online platforms like DBA, Gul&Gratis, and Google Shopping could amplify demand.

In partnership with Orderly, experts in reverse logistics and online sales, the City of Copenhagen explores this avenue, aiming to facilitate seamless access to reusable products on Orderly Shop and other established online platforms.

The partnership is based on a call for partners, which City of Copenhagen published on 15.02.22.

The goal of the partnership is to test:

  • Logistics and everyday practices associated with a solution such as Orderly
  • The possibility of promoting reuse, especially with a focus on the types of products that cannot be immediately sold locally
  • Data flow and feedback in connection with the solution.

The partnership will run for a test period of 9 months starting 10. August 2022. Results will be published on this website.

Increasing Reuse

In its Resource and Waste Management Plan 2024, the City of Copenhagen aims to triple the direct reuse of resources by 2024 compared to the 2016 level. To achieve this, the city must significantly increase the collection of products for reuse and find markets for these items. This strategy ensures the continued circulation of existing resources, minimizing the need for new product consumption.
