Partnership: Reuse of Paint

Every year tonnes of water-based paint residues end up in the waste stream in Copenhagen. Could some of it be reused in local projects?

The city of Copenhagen is determined to triple the direct reuse of resources by 2024 compared to the 2016 levels.

In line with the waste and resource management plan for 2024, Copenhagen has identified the potential for reusing water-based paint. To explore this possibility, the city has teamed up with Paint it Forward (new website), a local socio-economic initiative.

Paint it Forward, headquartered in Copenhagen, conducts monthly distribution events, providing free paint to less privileged citizens, artists, and local organizations for their projects.

The partnership initiated collection and redistribution tests at a selected municipal recycling station from November 2021 to spring 2022. Since the initial succesful collection pilot, the partnership has expanded to include paint from more recycling stations. The goal is to expand the collaboration and enhance the optimization of water-based paint residue reuse not only in Copenhagen but potentially in other cities as well.
