Urban Symbiosis – an inspiration catalogue

“One company’s trash can be another company’s treasure.” This is the main idea behind the well-established concept of industrial symbiosis. How can the same idea be applied to smaller companies in an urban context?

Cities around the world play a key role in the green transition. Here is an incredible concentration of human resources, innovative influence, and finally, physical materials and waste.

Although most of our consumer goods, products, building materials, etc. are used in cities, they are rarely produced close by. They must be packaged and transported over long distances beforehand. However, in and around many cities, there is an unfolding trend towards local production and consumption; a development related to circular economy.

Central to this development are innovative companies, that manage to utilize the various types of waste streams specific to the urban environment, as a starting point for local and sustainable production. Thriving on each other's business, they form urban symbioses that reduce waste production, foster local production and consumption, and create sustainable jobs.

Background

In the autumn 2021, the city of Copenhagen established a partnership with Seenons B.V. and Transition ApS to develop a catalogue of inspiration with examples of local urban symbioses.

The catalogue includes examples of urban symbioses based on a variety of different residual resource streams to produce e.g. food & beverages, oil, apparel, ceramics, light fixtures, furniture, skateboards, and interior design items.
